Brutality as a Ceremonial Act

Dolphin is my favorite animal. Free, sociable and incredibly intelligent. However, there are civilizations that appear to think that dolphins are too much, and use them in their ritual purposes. Is the red sea of dolphins blood reality or a dream? Real photo or photo-montage? It would be good if only this could photo-montage…

Each year the sea around Faroe Islands (constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark, along with Denmark proper and Greenland), is stained red, not because of the effects of the climate or through a Biblical plague but because of the cruelty of supposedly human beings. Hundreds of the famous Calderon dolphins are slaughtered by young teens in a celebration to demonstrate their maturity and passage into adulthood. In this celebration those who not actively participating in the slaughter are watching. They don’t die instantly; they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with thick hooks. With each cut the dolphins produce a grim cry like that of a new born child.

I can not stand and not to ask a question, is it possible that in this way someone shows the maturity? Does the brutal and unnecessary killing hundreds of dolphins shows wisdom? For me this is just confirmation of facts that comparison people with animals is insulting – for animals, of course!

worst of all creatures: people. if a species has to dissapear is man.i go back, how to forgive? how GOD stands this? a priest told me once:if GOD would act as man,all of us would be dead with our damned souls

These people are not brave………….cowards……….killing harmless creatures. Why not they do it with a shark or a crocodile same like they are doing the ritual or ceremonies.I’ve a lot to say but………fking.

  • KB

This is infuriating. I understand “cultural differences” and all this, but this goes waaay beyond that. This is a heartless, disgusting massacre on innocent lives by a bunch of cowards… Maturity? How ridiculous! Part of maturity is having a respect for other beings of the world from their point of view. In my opinion, this includes animals… This is barbaric and savage. There is nothing noble, good, or mature about it. This horrifying, cruel, torturous act should be stopped…but how…?

  • tseno

i wonder what would happen if one starts to throw the hook on his fellow humans at one of these parties… maybe they’ll just kill each other having fun… what a mess…

That`s absolutely unacceptable. It is a crime against nature. International organizations must do something!

  • katy

Why is this different than hunting? There’s an excess of dolphins in Denmark, and this is their way of equalizing the environment. It helps the ecosystem at large.

    • carty

what a f***ing load of BS the different to hunting is that you don’t round up the hole herd while everyone watches this is just plain cruel and if they did’nt over fish the ecosystem would be fine this not the answer

i say…. these culture are not acceptable and their disgusting behavior… hope that thi will resolve sooner… in our country… we saw one of those living animals… it’s always on national TV…and we helped trapped dolphins or whales go back in the ocean… we respect bio diversity…. we have a republic act…. on our shorelines…. no fishing…. because we respect the nature… back to those people… let me tell you karma will kill you..

  • Lins

Oookkk people, calm yourselves. Granted, these images sicken me just as much as the next person, but this isn’t about coming into “maturity”. Actually look at the men in the photo and you will realize that many of them are quite old (balding). It’s part of the towns lively hood, their survival. Their main source or industry, food, etc. It IS barbaric, but you should also look into our own slaughterhouses, for we are far more brutal to our own livestock than these people here. Other examples, look at the seal hunts, also cruel, but also an integral part of certain towns means to survival. Our own fishing industry and transport ships kill thousands of sea creatures, snaring them in seine nets indiscriminately and tossing the dead remains of turtles/sharks/dolphins/and whales back into the deep. Look at the fishing trollers who do considerable damage to the oceanic floor and delicate corals that house millions of creatures. ALSO, that the third largest illegal trade in the world is that of endangered animals for medicines, pelts, and food.
Helping defenseless animals starts with YOU, so stop fretting over one towns means to survive and try to look at the bigger picture.

    • Anant Singh

To LINS:- Do not try to be over smart …! yes it happened before too. Even my profession engage slaughtering. But killing for (any) kind of f*** religion purpose is going against “Nature”(the true GOD).
AND to others:- plz… do not compare dolphins to tigers, and croc.s as u r only encouraging them to do this to them too. These people r not weak. Discourage them by comparing them to urselves.
To Them:- if ur relegion is imp. for u try something non-cruel alternative, without damaging nature.

    • plainpfft

haven’t you ever heard people’s lives had been saved by dolphins?
And also, they actually help the aquariums and circuses the most.
They’re intelligent and kind, I can even say much better than me D:
I SIMPLY REFUSE TO BE PUT ON THE SAME LEVEL AS THOSE LOWLIFES FOR SLAUGHTERING INNOCENT LIVES.

  • Dyrdhra

    • ADMIN

I hope that Dyrdhra will not be mad on me, I will just add Google translate of his comment:

“Not much difference with the mass killing of any kind for human consumption, see the slaughter in large numbers of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and other more in line with the consumer market. Make an entry in the places of sacrifice of these and have the same reaction from people. There are still those who say that there is more “human” (huh??) Slaughter, to cause less suffering. Come on, suffering is suffering, no matter the amount. Pepper in the eyes of others was always drops.”

  • Magnus

    Hello
You are all hypocrits. And the ” info” is .. Well. There is not one single true fact in that text.
For the first, The Faroe Islands are not in Denmark. We are in the Danish Kingdom, we have our own parlament and so on. So don’t blame the danes for this matter. There is no such thing as “a annual kill”. Not at all. We do not go out with huge ships like the japanese and hunt pilotwhales once a year. We don’t use huge ships at all.
If a pod of whales is spotted close to the islands, a ship convoy (of small boats and fishing vessels) go out to the whales and chase them to the closest legal bay or fjord, where the convoy try to make the whales beach them selves, of the whales don’t do that we go out with these iron hooks you see on the fotos, and put them in the blowhole and drag them to the beach. Yes. That does hurt of course. But then, as fast at possible, someone kill them, by cutting their spinalcord. BS that they do suffer for a long while. They die allmost instantly… It is b…..t that the only participants are young boys who want to prove their manhood. This have nothing to do with becoming a man. The whalekilling in the Faroe Islands have been here for more than a thousand years. For more than 900 years, this was surely done for food, because most of the people had nothing else to live of. Potatoes, fish, birds and whalemeat was the main food. Now adays, we kill them for food supliment. We can go to the store and buy meat, cow meat, chicken and so on. Which we also do. We don’t eat whalemeat to often because of polution.
I can tell, that in the past, we used sharp iron hooks instead of the blunt hooks we use today, and we used whalespears too. But those two are illeagl now. The whales are killed by cutting their spinalcord with a knife with a long blade… Don’t believe in whalef….s like that idiot who wrote that text at the top of this page. What you read about whaleslaugther from Seashepherds site, is propaganda and lies.

    All the best.

About first of Your informations… This is from wikipedia:
“The Faroe Islands, sometimes Faeroe Islands, Faroe(s), or Faeroes (Faroese: Føroyar, Danish: Færøerne) are an island group situated between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately halfway between Great Britain and Iceland. The Faroe Islands are a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark, along with Denmark proper and Greenland.”
So You are not from Faroe Islands (means you are liar) or You do not know where you live (means you are stupid).
About rest of Your comment I will not say anything. If You are liar than is irrelevant to answer. If You stupid, what to talk with you…

      • faroe

This is the next section in Wikipedia about the Faroe islands, wich ADMIN omitted:
“The Faroe Islands have been an autonomous province of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948. Over the years, the Faroese have been granted control of most matters. Some areas still remain the responsibility of Denmark, such as military defence and foreign affairs.”
        As MAGNUS truly says:
“For the first, The Faroe Islands are not in Denmark. We are in the Danish Kingdom, we have our own parlament and so on.”
        Get the facts right ADMIN

        • Katarina

As I see You are part of Denmark and You don’t love it.
That not means that You are not part of it!
          Second thing: about dolphins:
Dolphin is a wild animal, and in most of civilized countries killing wild animals is forbidden by law!
You can not compare dolphins with pigs. You do not feed these dolphins, you just kill them.
What would be happen with me if I kill 200 deers? I will go to jail for a long time!

        • Katarina

And one more thing, ave to ADMIN!
You could remove his comment but You left it!
And just censuring those obscene words, spoken by this neanderthal!
I would remove his comment immediately if I could!

          • faroe

Of course! Remove the critical comments. That will give a nice objective point of view.

          • Faroe

            Katarina:
“You can not compare dolphins with pigs. You do not feed these dolphins, you just kill them.”
So it would be better if we farmed the dolphins and feeded them just to kill them, as we do with pigs, chickens, cows and so on? These whales has their freedom until the day they are slaughtered. Absolutely a more humane life than animals living in cages.

          • Anti-humanLeague

I give little about Faroe’s nationalism or any other north-europe national pride. In fact, it matter least what it means to all people reading and watching these outrageous pictures now. You already know what the world thinks about you in Faroe; that you are no longer considered among the few real civilizations in the world. Don’t try to justify the obvious please, don’t make your own tomb wider, please… In some countries would be tradition to kill babies, but under any circunstance in the whole order of the creation, those things would be considered acceptable or anything whatsoever. So, to hell with you all who support these crimes as a “way of living”, because the times to make people like you no more than cattle, are more than ever under justification.. National pride is put to test with intelligence, not barbarism. Grow up, please.. I know barbarians destroyed Rome, but please, don’t come now to ruin where we are trying to go next, nowadays…

      • Alice

I just wanted to say that i’m from Denmark, and it’s true that The faeroe islands are still a part of the Danish Kingdom, but they have their own parliament and make their own decisions.

And when it comes to the whales the danish government hasn’t tried to stop it because they get that it’s an ancient tradition.
And even if they did try they properly wouln’t have the authority.

I don’t support it myself, but in my opinion it’s not worse than any of the other animals being slaughtered every day.

        • ADMIN

Yes, You are right. I APOLOGIES TO DENMARK. I know that Denmark have nothing to do with this and, unfortunately, Denmark also can’t do anything about it.
But I can’t remove name “Denmark” from this post because formally it is true, Faroe Islands are part of Denmark. :S
Perhaps I thought that everybody knows these facts… :(

          • JTM

Once again. Faroe Isles are NOT a part of Denmark. Faroe Isles are a part of Danish Kingdom (mere tradition). It is something very similar to Great Britain and Canada (except Canada sports it’s own military). Can British prime minister order or ban anything in Canada? Hardly. So please, don’t blame Danes for something they don’t have control over.
P.S. I live in Denmark and I’m not a Dane, so I’m unbiased and also I know better than someone who clicks the info about the country (without having the slightest idea about her) on wikipedia and then speaks about it with the air of great authority.

          • WhyNotTheWhales

“But I can’t remove name “Denmark” from this post because formally it is true, Faroe Islands are part of Denmark. :S
Perhaps I thought that everybody knows these facts… :(”

Fine, don’t remove that. That’s not the worst lie in there. But how about the part where you say it’s a rite of passage into manhood? Or the fact that they are cut 1-3 times with hooks? I mean.. really? We cut them with hooks? No, one cut to the spinal chord and they’re dead.

It looks brutal in pictures of course, these are huge animals, with a lot of blood in them and when they are killed in the ocean, that makes it look even more gory. If all slaughterhouses killed their animals in the ocean it would look pretty much the same.

Now, I’m not against having a different opinion. If you’re a vegetarian, please lets just agree to disagree. There are other good reasons too, to just agree to disagree. But soiling a whole country’s reputation because the pictures look gory? It’s a slaughter, there’s going to be blood. And why? Because it’s your favourite animal? Well it so happens to be my favourite kind of eating. Would you give up your favourite food because someone thought it was so gosh darn cute? No, you would not.
We are not barbarians, monsters or any other insult most people with too little knowledge about us, throw at us. We are a country who eats what the sea gives us.

We kill them for food. And that’s it. There’s absolutely nothing more to it. Nothing. It’s not a rite of passage, it’s not a brutal killing just for the fun of it, and really? Screams like a newborn baby? There’s nothing more to it than food. And don’t say well just eat what all other people are eating, like cows and such. Why should we? Because you say so? No! We are killing them for food, and there is nothing wrong with that.

            - Ein Føroyingur!

      • Faroe Islands are autonomous!!!

WOW even the admin thinks Denmark has part in this!!! Denmark doesn’t decide anything on the Faroe Islands, they are autonomous, that USED TO BE ruled by Denmark.
Denmark has absolutely nothing to do with whale slaugthering.
Its amazing to see how people have absolutely no critical sense to what is said on the internet. Its all just copy-past. Wow again!!!

  • Faroe

Nice story! This has nothing to do with the truth. The faroese people kill the whales for meat, and use every pound of it for food, and has done so for hundreds of years. It has nothing to do with young teens demonstrating their maturity.

Come on, don’t be so naive!

  • BigAirChi

This is rediculos, what people in their right mind would do this to these innocent animals, i wonder if these people would mind if someone did this to them…, these people need to be jailed.

  • shadow

that is no point to doing this, it is inhumane.i don’t like this. it is really disturbing. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, i feel like doing the same to them see how they like it. this type of act would not be acceptable if we has sane people.

  • dean

if the dolphins are so smart, why do they keep coming back every year?

    • cass

maybe they use a bait? trapped them with the net? i mean u can see all the dolphins were so near with each other n so near with the ground..or maybe the location is famous with dolphin’s nest?
even the dolphins are consider a smart animals but they still an animal..they are still weak creatures n there are some limit of their thinking than human..so,we human who have mind should protected them not killing them like this people!!

  • the airbender…

what ever reason they have…its not a human act,, how could they do such damned thing??are they human being??…i hope this thing will be over. how could this thing continuously happen even the international whaling commission disagreed on this kind of cetacean hunting…i guess those people participating in killing those pity creatures have no hearts…

  • cass

    wtf?? killing a harmless animal to show they are mature? this is ridiculous!!! i think only coward will only do that..this situation is like a grown up adult killing a helpless baby..did they still do this things again now?i really hope they don’t…pls don’t..pls have a mercy on this creature.. ;_;

  • Soni

Have you ever seen a bunch of pigs getting slaughtered? or a bunch of cows? sheeps? What is the difference? it is all for food and all these animals are harmless creatures, so really – what is the difference?
this article is written by somone who obviously is an anti-whale-killing-guy and of course therefor writes the article to his own advantage. PURE PROPAGANDA.
Maybe you should come to the Faroes to see for yourself before having an opinion :) (unless you are an vegetarian)

    • Rico

Man, don’t compare dolphins with pigs!
      Look at what Katarina saids:
“Dolphin is a wild animal, and in most of civilized countries killing wild animals is forbidden by law!
What would be happen with me if I kill 200 deers? I will go to jail for a long time!”

  • Soni

Have you ever seen a bunch of pigs getting slaughtered? or a buns of cows? whales? they are all harmelss creatures but killed for food. So really, what is the difference?
The person who wrote this article is obviously an anti-killing-whale-guy and therfor writes this article for his own advantage. PURE PROPAGANDA.
So about this law which forbids killing various animals in various contries: then how about cows? they are considdered as HOLY in India but nearly rest of the world eats them? or Pigs? they are forbidden to eat in the muslim countries and rest of the world eat it. how about that?

  • Soni

Rico: Deers are in Norway killed for food. they are wild. in many countries rabbits are wild and killed for food. If the animals could choose – they would all choose to live in the wild! So really you are saying that it is all OK to kill animals as long as they don’t live wild? it’s US the HUMANS who say whether they can live wild or kept. and for the record there is no law in the Faroe Islands that forbid killing whales or else we wouldn’t do it :)

    • Angry

Yes, you are right, in most of countries is allowed to kill deer, but you have to pay for it, you have to kill only deer for which you pay for, with FORESTER on your neck, AND YOU DON’T USE HOOK TO DO THAT!

  • Faroe

Nice job ADMIN. You removed my comment proving the opposite of your article, with images showing that whales are killed for food. This is propaganda from a man with absolutely no insight in the subject. I will say the same as SONI “Maybe you should come to the Faroes to see for yourself before having an opinion” instead of making your opinion from the couch watching TV.

  • A proud faroes citizen

the only differents between pig killing and whale killing is that, the pigs are killed inside a building. So that peoble dont see the bloodshed in the killing of the pigs.. So the killing of the whale that we do on the Faro islands, would be fine whit the rest of the world if it was done insede a big warehouse, so that peoble did not see the bloodshed !
The facts in the teks above are incorrect, we only kill the pilot whale for food and for food only. it is not a ritual.

    • nooooobody

OMG, this is worse than I thought!
They cover their crimes with some BS examples!
This looks like a conspiracy of the entire nation!
And I think they will continue to do this!

    • perchave

      to a proud Faroes citizen:

Isn’t it possible to find another way to kill clean ,for food or not ,at least do not makes theses animals soufering! I respect trdition specialy about hunting as long as it is done in the great respect for the animal life we take! When pigs , cows, lamps are killed in a civilized contry , there are killed clean and fast, with nail gun… dead instantly!!! Is it the case for theses dolphins…Instantly???I totaly respect the Inooits way to hunt only what we eat… Tell me !are you starving in Denmark???
I thought only Japaneses were able to do things like that!!! Difficult to fit the pictures, in a cultural album!
      Have a nice day,

      • Why blame Denmark??? Is it not the Faroe Islands we are talking about???

Are you talking about Denmark og Faroe Islands? In Denmark they don’t eat whale!!! They eat pork and beef. Don’t know why you confuse Faroe Islands with Denmark :P Ok maybe because people don’t know that Denmark and Faroe Islands are completely different countries, they don’t speak the same language for one…Faroe Islands control themselves…

  • noone

No, probably You just put your self (all by your self) in spam list of CMS of site. You are so “pain in the a…s” for him.

  • melvin

people from there are so f..kin brutal! shut up!!..

  • Soni

nooooobody: Really…. is that the best argument youv’e got? hahaha!

Of course we make comparison because we don’t see any real difference and seems like you don’t have any REAL argument against that either.
Wild vs not wild not a good argument :)
yeaah we’re brutal like a butcher in a butchers-shop killing a cow so YOU can get your delicious STEAK :)

  • Soni

Angry: So your’e actually saying that it makes it less brutal to kill any animal if you pay money for it?

we don’t kill the whales with a hook. they use very sharp knives so that the pain lasts a split second like in every other animal slaughter.

    • Katarina

Actually YES IT IS! You pay money for something that is not yours!
      It belong to the Nature!
And you pay money to someone who cares about stability in nature!
But you are barbarians and you do not understand anything that all these people telling you!

      • George

no the faroese people don’t money for anything. I don’t know why you’re involving money in this argument. thats silly.. faroese people couldn’t think less about money when they see a pilot whale,
and WHAT? what a stupid thin to say that the faroese people kill the pilot whale with a hock? who in there right mind could kill such a big animal with a hock? thats nonsense.! they are using a big knife, like every other slaughter man house anything in in the world. so I don’t know why you people are against whaling in the Faroe islands, its the same as when a hunter in Greenland kill a seal! or when they kill a cow in america.. or a pig in Denmark. ..

A REAL MAN would NEVER KILL unless THREATENED! Only a weak man wanna be has to kill to feel like a man. Save your “its my culture” comments for someone who cares!

  • Olavur

This artical is untrue. There is only one reason why the faroese people kill the whales, and that´s becaus the whales are food. The whales are not dolphins, but pilot whales. If anyone is saying the whale-hunt is cruel and unnessesary, then you say the same thing about slaughtering a cow or pig. the only difference is that you normaly don´t see while other animals get slaughtered. The slaughter takes place indoor where nobody can see it, and that is unfortunaly not possible when slaughtering a whale.

  • taq

Many different species of whales and dolphins occur in the waters around the Faroe Islands. Of these, a number of small toothed whales, mainly pilot whales, are taken in the Faroe Islands for their meat and blubber. The characteristically Faroese form of whaling, known in Faroese as grind, was once common around the North Atlantic. Organised on the local community level and regulated by national legislation, the Faroese whale drive has over the years successfully adapted to modern standards of resource management and animal welfare.

Katarina :) no it has nothing to do with money.

  • Katarina

George and all others from Faroe, I think You didn’t understood any word I said. So I will speak again!
You can’t compare dolphins with pigs. You do not feed these dolphins!
If You feed the pig – she belong to you! You can kill her because purpose of this pig is to be food. And still you can’t kill her without any control and standards, or you going to jail!
So I will do compare dolphins with deers – both are wild animals.
What would be happen with me and my companions if we kill 200 deers? We will go to jail for a long time! Why? Because this deer is a wild animal and don’t belong to us! He belong to the nature! So I need to pay big money (if i want to kill it) to authorities! Why? Because this money goes to someone who cares about stability in nature!
If you continue to kill dolphins and whales without any control – you can permanently damage all ecosystem! Specially if you kill it for fun (and you don’t have any proof that this isn’t for fun).
So please stop doing this! Specially stop doing this without any control!
And these images shows that you don’t have any control in this thing!
It can be right that someone really do it for fun or for showing maturity? Yes! Can be! Why? Because when no control, everyone can do whatever he want!
How do You know that this is not true? Do You know every man in Faroe and what he thinks? Can you guarantee that everyone in Faroe doing this just for food! If you say yes, you are stupid.
Maybe you are right! Maybe this all article is b…s…
But it looks very real! And your authorities make it real because they don’t have any control!
You need to have control of doing these thing!
Then I will tell that You are right.
Until then, You are just barbarians for me.

    • George

I will say yes because I’ve seen thee whale hunt. and it is well organised.
and no I dont have any prof that the faroese people kill for fun right here.. you know why? thats because thats not inappropriate in whaling.. no one? yes maybe sadam husain, hitler, and bush killed for fun but whaling has nothing to do with fun. Im sick of people thinking that killing is fun. no its not funny. its the culture , its the meat, its the blubber. oh yeah katarina that sound like great fun HAHAHA. hey! take a week of work.. or sea sheppard or what you do, come to the faroe islands, meet the people and you will know for sure why? when? and how great the meat taste.
And by the way I cant see any one of those men on the picture laughing.. you know why? this is in there blood.. its has been there ig over a 1000 years. this is a culture

  • Katarina

Admin I know we are pain in the a.. for you…, but I need to tell this.
My last speak on this article I promise, sorry again.
George You still didn’t understood me.
I was telling you about CONTROL! CONTROL OF YOUR LOCAL AUTHORITIES! You all look like a BUNCH OF BARBARIANS! This is because you don’t have control! When there is no control – everything can be done, even killing for fun!

  • cxdfgh

dan said it nicely. let me repeat.

    THESE HUMAN ARE SATAN.

I am not an animaltarian, but this is just sick. These people should be in prison far away from negatively influencing young impressionable minds. What the hell are they thinking! No pun intended.

  • Frank

Those boats are with nets to herd the dolphins to the shore where the slaughtering is held. Really that is not a thing a human should do. That is just disgusting.

  • From Faroe Islands

    Katarina:
So we can’t prove to you that whalekilling is not for funt. That whale killing has nothing to do with maturity. BUT you can’t eighter prove that it IS for FUN or that it HAS something to to with Maturity – SO STOP TALKING LIKE YOU HAVE EVIDENCE!
You say, when we don’t feed an animal, we cannot kill/hunt them. So… what about FISH????!?!?! Mostly people don’t feed them!

    • The chosen one

      What are you talking about?

      • ADMIN

        I’m talking this:
Man you are sick, you write 50 – 100 comments on this article with different names. (most of them are in spam because i have smart CMS) Go to the doctor, receiving treatment…

        • The chosen on

Actually no, the link to this blog was posted on another Faroese website making some other Faroese people trying to defend the whale killings, including me. Your comments don’t even conern the whale killing and you have nothing to build your facts on, maybe because you don’t have any. Please, don’t be one of those naive people believing everything they’re reading. Whaling.fo for real facts, please.

        • ADMIN

LOL! Man you are so funny, that I needed to dig though all this spam to find this and approve it! Because is so stupid! Hahaha!
Tell me why i don’t see visits from this mysterious website?

  • Taq

ADMIN: So every comment that you don’t like (and that is pro-whale-hunting and-against-that-stupid-lying- factless-article comments) you just put on the spam list and you never hear from these people again.
thats the way to have an objective discussion!
And Spam lists usually work this way. You block an entire IP address so if one name (aka ip address) is on spam list it is not possible to only change names (that is if you have an SMART spam-blocking-system).
    OVER AND OUT!!!

    • ADMIN

Lol, man you have very good opinion about your self :)
Do You really think I have time for you?
For one sick guy who write 100 comments per day on one single article?
You put your self and only by your self on spam list because you write 100 comments per day! I have 200 – 300 spam comments per day, and you expect that I will seek for all your BS to remove them from spam list?
You are really sick! I’m serious! Go to doctor man!
      And don’t talk about people!
You are the single one! Single sick guy!

    STUPID PEOPLE !!!!

  • Ruby

    Hi there!
Couldn’t help but notice this quite misinformed blog post.
Hunting pilot whales has nothing to do with “manhood” rituals. Where on earth did you get that idea from?

We hunt pilot whales for the meat. It’s as simple as that. Sure it looks bloody because of the killing happening in the ocean but is it that different from killing cattle for meat? Or do you classify animals on some “cuteness” scale that you’re not telling us about? In the US there are killed a hundred thousand cows each day. Try doing that in the ocean and see how big the blood patch would be. I reckon you could see it from space.

Like my countryman mentioned in a previous comment, we have hunted whales for centuries (it’s called living off the land btw) and I see no reason not to as long as it’s not an endangered species. Pilot whales are probably the animal whose numbers have been monitored for the longest period of time, with records starting in the 1300s and we still monitor the pilot whale population rigorously. There are about 700.000 animals in the world today and the faroese kill less than a thousand each year (much less than die from attrition and old age) and if the pilot whale were to become endangered, the hunting would stop instantly.

As for the cruelty you speak of. Ofcourse the animals suffer to some extent. It is unavoidable when you hunt and kill an animal. But it is no more cruel than it needs to be (nor is it that cruel compared to how other nationalities hunt and kill) and the tools used today are designed to inflict as little pain as possible. The only actual pain the animal feels is when it’s spinal chord and arteries are severed at the neck. Which incidentally is no more painful than the killing methods used in industrial abbatoirs that process cows, swine and poultry in countries like the USA, england and germany.

Again, the reason why it looks so shocking is because the blood flows into the ocean. Would it be more acceptable if they were killed in an industrial factory where the blood was led away into drains in the floor?

We live off the resources available to us in the country that we live in. And seeing as it is a group of islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, we eat meat that is from oceanic animals. Is that so weird?

So in my opinion.. Unless you do not eat meat at all, your outrage is hypocritical at best.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions or criticisms of my opinion expressed here :)

  • Eirikur

What is the difference between an innocent animal and a guilty one?

    Just curios.

    • Bryan

      F…..g Awsome

  • Danielle

this is JUST PLAIN SICK…dolphins are such sweet animals and don’t do anything to harm anyone. So for all you d*** heads that keep making smart a** comments…go to hell.

  • Andru

Well, first of all, we’re not danish, but part of the danish kingdom.
And i think you should really get your facts right, before you fill the readers with lies. The pilot whale, are related to dolphins, but they’re still not dolphins.
The “grind” isn’t a yearly tradition, where we hunt them down like beasts. If we accindently find a group of pilot whales nearby the villages, we try to lead them in, we don’t force them.
Then we put a blunt hook in the blowhole, to get them ashore. And with a specially designed, thin spear, we dislocate the spinalchord. It all happens in a matter of seconds, the “stabbing” is extremely quick.
And, this isn’t a ritual, so that teenage-boys can become men. It’s all done by elderly, experienced men, who teach the young boys, who only watch.
It’s all an ancient tradition from the vikings, that we have improved to perfection, so we don’t torture these beautiful animals. Every bit of the whale is used for food.
I know that free animals can’t be drawn into comparison with pigs, cattle and chicken on slaugtherhouses. But if you think about it. All the animals on slaugtherhouses are caged all they’re lives, being pushed around and fed up, and most of them killed by choking (lowered into a cage, that’s filled with CO2)
And pilot whales live a free, pleasant life and aren’t stressed out on any matter, and die swiftly. And you say shame on us!?!
No, you’re getting it all wrong, shame on you.
Greetings from The Faroes, i hope you come to your senses.

  • budee

shame on you andru for supporting such a barbaric practice. u barbaric fuk.

  • BOBBY

these western people call themselves civilized

  • Neil Dodhia

Way 2 sad…Pls ppl dnt do this…Its so wrong ! Get a life.

  • janoon

all these are really really sick peoples ………..if they are so brave why not they go for shark or crocodile…………. but all those are sick and mean and not that brave must they dont have balls thats why they are just killing inocent dolphens so harmless humen friendly shame for all those fks allzz those

  • Vonn

This brought me to tears.. how could anyone be so cruel to helpless animals? I couldn’t bear the thought of hearing those dolphins scream in pain… Someone who kill them with hooks. Bunch of cowards.. how is becoming mature lead to killing an innocent creature? If they’re so f***ing brave why not kill a Shark?

  • taviboy

Obviously these people hunt for food just as we americans slaughter (and also hunt) for food. Yeah, these photos look gruesome but then again what’s happening in our slaughter house is just as gruesome as these. I wish we kill less for food. I am no vegan and I do enjoy meat and I’m just as guilty as any other meat eaters. I don’t think it’s fair to condemn these people for what they do when we do exactly that, killing for food. It doesn’t matter if they are dolphins, cattle, pigs, chicken, fish, or any other creatures. A life is a life.

  • lloyd

at first sight i was appalled but people are right, this is a tradition. if you dont like it you probably wouldnt like killing your own food either but you get that done for you now dont you. try living without meat being cut and packaged for you and youll understand that these people are just killing to eat.

  • stampy

that is f***ing horrifying. i hope karma gets all those super-mature idiots and someone slaughters them.

  • midi

    Bottom Line –

If you eat meat in America then you support a form of killing which is far more brutal, cruel, and unnatural than what the Faroe people do.

The only people rightfully allowed to complain are vegetarians.

    All others are hypocrites.

  • Roberto

  • Sgt Dead

Their faces are published officially on photos. They will regret that. Someone will shoot them and their families, and even torture them. Sources prove that.

  • David

    Hi guys.

    First off:

I’m from Denmark. The Faroe Islands have their own government. The Faroe Islands are a parliamentary democracy within a constitutional monarchy. The monarchy being the Danish for historical reasons.

The Faroe Islands have their own flag, their own rules and regulations.

Stating that the Faroe Islands is a part of Denmark can be compared to claiming that old colonial empires such as India is till a part of the UK.

Hence to quote the original article:

“Each year the sea around Faroe Islands, Denmark is stained red”

    This is a misleading statement.

Second. While I find the whaling unnecessary, and I do find the photos included in the article to be brutal, I acknowledge the fact that this is not much different from fishing. I also acknowledge the fact that this is done solely for food. It is a tradition dating back many hundred of years. It is taught by the elder to the young. But this does not make it a manhood ritual.

Hence to quote the title of the article:

    “Brutality as a Ceremonial Act”

    This is straight up wrong.

A fisherman landing hundreds of fish, that are left on the deck to suffocate is just as brutal in my opinion. When you think of it, it is even worse. At least these whales are being put out of their misery.

I do have the knowledge that these whales are in abundance near the Faroe Islands, but as far as I can read the Pilot Whale is amongst the Red List of Threatened Species the IUCN lists both the Long-finned and Short-finned. They are listed as “Lower Risk; conservation dependent”.

Solely for this reason. For the preservation of the species I am against the whaling.

Let’s put arguments aside and focus on the facts:

Seeing animals getting killed whether it’s in a slaughter house or in the nature is brutal.

The locals at the Faroe Islands hunt whales as they’ve done for hundred of years. This is done solely to provide food.

The hunting itself, – put aside the fact that these are whales – is not more cruel than the work of your average fisherman. The whales suffer less than the suffocating fish.

The hunting itself, – again put aside the fact that these are whales – are not worse than caging livestock for an entire lifetime in order to slaughter them.

The species of whales that is hunted is well on it’s way to become an endangered species. Therefore it can be argued that the whaling should be stopped.

In the end the whole debate can be cooked down to:

A misleading article has been posted on a website. The aim of this article is to provide a huge traffic boost for the website owner. To enhance this traffic the article tries to depicture the whaling in the most barbaric way possible.

Through this article a local hunting method that looks very bloody and brutal meets the eye of the general world population. This method however in terms of pain inflicted to the animal is not worse than what is generally accepted in the modern world.

Most people find whaling cruel as many whale species are endangered and “whales are cute”. This creates a flaming debate.

I personally am concerned about the whale species. I find the pictures brutal but not more horrid than what I know is going on in slaughter houses and on fishing boats.

I personally am concerned about articles being posted for the sole reason to provoke and to create hatred. Especially when these article as this one contains more misleading information and wrong claims than truth.

Face it. Meat is murder. Damn tasty murder. Think about what meat you consume yourself. Think about the living conditions for the livestock you stuff yourself with. Do what you can in order to preserve endangered species. Finally be critical when you stumble upon a random article that serves your barbaric pictures.

  • jason harris

My opinion is that very few things that us Homo sapiens do are necessary. I have read many horrible things that a single person has done animals, and also groups of people. It just takes one as..ole to do something messed up then the herd will follow and do the same thing. For some sick reason people actually get off on torturing things and they cannot admit it to themselves. They have done experiments where one person would shock another with a machine and was only to go as high as an allowed voltage. The person kept shocking the other with an amount of voltage higher than allowed, and the subject of this experiment was the one who administered the shocks and he did not know it. We humans are an abomination.

  • a faroese girl

i’m from the faroe islands and let me get somthing strait.
those are not dolphines. it’s a kind of whales and i dont know how it’s called in english.
it’s NOT a ritual. we eat them and i’m pretty sure that u eat pigs and chiken so stop saying that we are freaks and things like that.
and they are NOT tortured. we kill them fast.
    so shut the UP.

  • EK

killing a pig or a cow or anything else for food consamption is been done in controled enviroment and kill tha animal instanlty without make suffering or destress to the animal. here the dolphins or what ever you want to call them been killed not the same way as a cow would bee killed

  • Jon

Look. This is a ceremony that have ben going around in a f***ing long time. To say that these people are sick and satan is just f***ing wrong. The whales get eating after the killing, i ben to one of these cermonys and i know that s**t. Stop all your PETA vegetarian s**t. Animals eat animals , and humans eat animals. Its simple natur which all these f***ing people are claiming to protect (nature) but somehow they just cant accept the truth that nature is brutal.

  • Ellaith

There’s nothing more brutal about it than any other meat gathering excursion. They are a food source for the people of that area. And besides? They’re DOLPHINS!!! Stop your damn griping when there are human beings that are put through hundreds of times worse than that. Turn your attention to where it matters.

  • hey hey

well…i hope they at least can the dolphins and sell them as tuna or something. very wasteful other wise.

  • Ergoadam

    Kudos to the admin :-)

You did the right thing to publish these pictures and add appropriate facts to it.Its indeed gory and cruel act.

As for people belonging to these islands, dont play it down mates.

You know why there is an outrage here against all your deeds.

So sad to see these pics and what these guys are doing, cant even look at them the second time :-((

  • all

    wow…

  • Dave W.

Please go to Wikipedia, Faroe Islands, Culture, then 8.5 Whaling. Yes, these
poor creatures are mammals, but not dolphins. They are long-finned pilot
whales. They are being killed for food. The Islanders have done the same thing for hundreds of years. Maybe it should be stopped. Please read it for
yourself. In any case, this website has gone out of its way to mislead
and enrage its readers. Shame on them!!

    • Tom

But you can clearly see the whales are being killed by HOOKS! WHAT THE! talk about a slow death. Fair enough its for food, but this is not right! To kill an animals so painfully. You might be alright with it, but I’m not!

  • Johhny Longdong

These people should be punched in the face…

  • MAdrid

man you guys need to burn in fire slowly slowly and pull you out then slowly again burn you in fire then pull you out then again and again till you all suffer and feel each and every pain forever even if your dead you will feel it in your souls till god come and teach you more lesson… someone has to stop this act of evil

  • Ev

For those saying that this is to even out the dolphin population: that is a stupid excuse. these traditions have not ALWAYS been active, which means that their population was fine before it happened. or are you going to tell me these people took their land from land-walking dolphins?

For those calling people hypocrites due to animal slaughter in other areas: since when does that give these people a right to kill these dolphins? it doesn’t.

For those saying it’s a part of how they make a living: this event doesn’t look like it happens every other week. i’d say it happens rarely. things that happen so rarely are not something people rely upon frequently.

no matter what the reason, this is really disgusting… the least they could do is do it without bloody hooks. i mean really, i would like to see someone defend that.

  • Pravis

Killing is cruel, in name of tradition, well it is acceptable [partial], Now lets talk facts, to stop real cruelty we need to stop wars. There is no greater sin than killing of our own kind. Millions are being killed in wars through out the world, have you raised your voice, you can’t, thats because your voice is not strong enough for them to hear.

You say slaughtering of these dolphins are painful, well do you eat ham, lamb chops, steak, chicken, chicken wings, fried and steamed fish or whatever?. What is you have some kind of celebration at home or any of your concerned places, don’t you all eat meat. Meat is meat only after taking the life. What do you think these are, stones? They too are living beings. Will you ever eat live animals or fish? NO. You need to first kill and then savor. Why not raise your voice against these slaughters. You can’t and you won’t, thats because we are all share the same SIN if thats what you call it. Nobody is innocent, crime is common, taking life is crime.

So if you guys just start blaming these people of Denmark, well thats childishness. Killing these innocent Dolphins is sad to to hear and intolerable to look at, but then the world is too big and in some places people kill each others in the name of war. War is evoked buy just one or two mad persons in need of something stupid [that could be personal, international cause, or what ever], result – hundreds and thousands die and the people who die does not actually know for what they have fought.

Most of the dolphins meat are canned, and then imported to various countries and many of the enterprises sponsor UN and other such social programs, which reaches millions of hungry stomachs. People who are against these ceremony could have eaten dolphins meat too. Killing of dolphins has come down to nearly 60% in Faroe Islands. In the near future things will be just fine.

  • DVDA

    but their sooooo tasty:P

  • jaden

what is heck is peta gonna do??????????????will they interfere and stop it or not. These bastards will not stop it .

  • tom

    Hey guys,

We have learned a lot from these debates. I do eat meat like most of us in this thread but I’m for humanitarian slaugther of animals used for food. As for the pilot whales, I suppose that the good Faroese people can manage just well without eating whale meat which I think is more of a delicacy rather than a staple food.

For all the rest, peace. We can see through the issues better and contribute to world peace and harmoney if we watch out for what we post instead of resorting to flaming war.

  • PDF

Oh the hypocrisy. It’s as amusing as it is infuriating. People are so willing, and without second thought, to happily eat their processed meats and live in the destroyed habitats that are now their towns and cities and kill whatever animals are left alive through the pollution created to manufacture all our little convenience items, because god forbid we not have everything we could possibly ever need at any given moment right at our fingertips. But when someone else is exposed as harvesting meat for themselves, they’re suddenly inhumane monsters. We’re supposed to be the intelligent animal of this planet, and yet the majority of people seem to be nothing but irrational lunatics, ruled solely by emotion and entirely lacking sound reason.

  • faroegirl

    first: it’s not dolphins
second: you eat pigs and other animals. the suffer much more than these whales..
third: stop saying rude things about us only because we eat whales!!
and finaly: its not all the people from the faroe islandsthat eat whales. i dont. but i am not against it !!

  • little grey

If you think they are savage, you should not eat meat even KFC and Mcdonald. Be a pure vegetarian.

The people eating meat should watch slaughter house in your country, and then learn how do they get beefsteak from cows.

We know Sea Shepherd are always attacking whale hunting countries, but they are eating beefsteak after attacks.
    What a contradict action.

  • Don

Crazy !!!!!! We must stop this ritual…

  • Unk

these people are monsters.. am i the only one whos light headed from seeing this?

  • Nestor

sad to see really, however, how the world is turning towards a homogeneous culture at least these people have a culture and are following custom and tradition. far more then most, even if it is brutal and damaging to the environment. give them another tradition which carries the symbolism and practices of this ritual for them to continue instead of an outright ban which could lead to further, possibly worse, consequences in the future. same with the japanese and whaling, and so on.

  • matured person

there should be a ceremony on slaughtering matured kids from faero Islands! that should be fun.. :)

  • john

those who do these massacre must be hooked with the same tool untill their death…….no mercy 2 b shown to these bloody creatures who call themselves humans

  • Proud and Faroese

Omg … I am in shock ! This is just so .. stupid ? You really think we kill them to prove anything ?? Dudes .. Our grandgrandgrandgrand mothers and fathers kill them for food and we still do that ! Not to prove anything ?? And its not DOLPHINS ! Pilotwhales ! Theres a difference !! And really ?? They dont die right away ? We have tools to kill them ! Just like all of you have the right tools to kill pigs, cows, sheep ect. They dont feel any pain ! I demand that you change the information ! You guys dont know anything about this !! AT ALL !! Im really pissed ! You make us look so bad ! We are a country populated with 48000 people ! How much damage can we do ? Yes we kill them for food ! But you kill animals to ! So dont non of yall give me that crap !! Damnit !

  • eduard

well its wrong to judge based on what is written in the article!
i don’t think they kill the wales only for manhood ritual..maybe at some point they did that but i’m pretty sure they also consumed the meat !

well if the spepices are in danger of extinction than most definitely this should be stopped! but otherwise you cant judge..mean most of uss do eat meat..now we don’t see how the animal from our burger is slaughtered but it doesn’t make it less brutal!:P

  • horvi

this is part of their culture. you americans don’t even have a cultue…

    • Pebbles

Too many cmpoilmetns too little space, thanks!

  • Anon

I’m not gonna tell you what is morally right and wrong, but this is a stab at the Faroese Culture. I’ve been there, and I’ve been in this bloodshed, which I agree looks very brutal. This is not a ritual for entering adulthood. This is whale slaughter, the same way other countries slaughter cattle for one reason: food.

As I said, I have been in the Faroe Islands and I have seen this. Many of your statements, for example stabbing the whale with hooks, is pure b***s***. The uneccascary torture of the whales does not even exist. They kill them quickly and as painless as possible. And the blood-red sea? Cut your finger and squish one drop of blood in a glass of water. The whole ting turns blood-red with just one drop.

It looks brutal, but have you ever seen a cow being slaughtered and made into beef!? This is exactly the same as fishing, only on a bigger scale.

  • M1000

Good day to you all, I am one of these “CRAZD” beings, and i can assure you that THIS IS NOT A RITUAL! this year is the first year that we have had whalekilling in 8 years. We dont go out and look for the whales. we just take em when they come to our icelands.
we kill them because we need the meat and dont throw it away like a sickasslame ritual that you are talking about, that would just be sick. We have invented a new “weapon” that kills the whales within seckonds (1-3) so they wont be in pain, BECAUSE WE CARE!
NOT TORTURE! NOT RITUAL! NOT RELIGION!

So please please please get your frikkin stories right before you post something that you know nothing about!

  • fishman

Makes me hungry for sea food, anyone else get the same way?

  • tvp-tzm_advocate

This is a f**king stupid culture, IGNORANT and retrograde. Being a man is a lot more of being able to kill a peaceful and gentle animal, that makes you less than an animal because animals kill when they need to feed not to some stupid ritual. How about this challenge adults wanna be: leave you parents house and make a life on your own, that takes some guts, cruel fishing methods should be eliminated or changed for painless ones and controlled to not get extinct.

  • viktoria

wow i cant believe no one wants to get involved. This is the dumbest s**t i ever heard i mean dolphins save people from shark and theis fools are actin mad ignorant if u wanna proof that ur a so cold man which in their culture is an aggressive fool then try killen a shark or somethin that can fight back. I just dont get som people we sittin over here not knowing how to save endangered species while the other side of the globe is having fun and grown “MEN” are killing things like their 3 year olds who just got weapons not even a caveman would do such a thing kill a harmless animal for no reason.

  • Canadian

It’s truly disgusting seeing the hypocrisy yelled out by these barbaric f**ks calling for what would amount to genocide against the Faroese simply because they continue to follow their own culture. Canadian here, keep on doing what you’re doing Faroese and don’t listen to these ignorant pricks who most likely ignore the cruel meat industry in their own nations.

  • Murran

hahaha, its funny to keep seeing sites like this that are so full of propaganda. this isn’t a ceremony, this used to be one of only a few ways to get food in the old days.
there has been invented a new weapon that makes the killing of the whale much faster now, only taking 2-3 seconds. do some research before believing everything on the internet

  • samm

i can’t believe this is happening….what kind of culture or belief does this country have??? killing a mamal????its so sad…bcoz they are god’s creation just like us humans…i think the country who did these had nothing in common with criminals….:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

  • john welington

do you have these lager? as background image for my 1920×1200 screen?

    thx

  • I TASTE GOOD

It taste good, and we are not turturing this whale. look at spain they are turturing bulls.

  • manuel

if this is truly a ritual to prove manhood then it’s stupid. how can killing an innocent creature, that poses no danger to anyone, be considered courageous and make the killer a man? why not do this with great white sharks? those who are stupid enough to participate and actually live, are truly worthy to be called courageous. these idiots killing dolphins are nothing more that ego maniac cowards who kill animals who don’t fight back. they’re to scared to go up ageinst animals that actually bite.

  • runar

i assume you are all vegetarians because killing innocent mammals is so inhumane.
Next time you eat a hamburger, a hot dog or some other meal with fish or meat in it, think for a moment, Did that poor innocent animal commit suicide so I could eat? The answer is No. Every animal that is eaten is slaughtered in one way or another.
So if you are not vegetarians, you are just a bunch of hypocrites.

    • Easa

killing it to Eat that is something we benefit of it BUT killing it just to prove something Stupid like that,That is another story.

Am eating meat and I did slay So I can eat the meat But slaughter animals without any benefit to us just for something as silly as that is not ur right to do it.

Islam teached me to treat any living thing with kind and not killing it for any reason unless that living harm u like ( white ants )here u hv the right to protect ur self and try to kill it fast so It doent suffer.

Killing Dolfines with that Brutality is prohibeted by my religion and conflicted with my commen sence too So what I can say to u??
( In doomday each and every one of us will be Judjed by his/here actions in this life and then decide wether he/here will go to Heven or Hell)
Killing that Dolfines with that brutality even if u kill it fast and didnt need to kill it Will be something big in the doomday so watch watch u do It could lead u to Heaven or Hell.

What is the difference between killing a tamed jailed animal and a wild one?
The wild one did have a good life in freedom and are taken and killed in nature by rules of nature, but the tamed ones are jailed all their life, filled with growth hormones and slaughterd in a house away from common peoples eyes.
We,the faroese dont hunt for whales even if its our given rights. We just take a small percentage og the whale population when it has grown so big that they swim in between our islands.
We are the last decendants of vikings. Our language are what the vikings spoke back then.A unique language only spoken by 48000 people.
We will never bow to morons like you!
We are not scared of loosing profits by embargos. We will just eat more whales.
We dont need money to excist.

  • arinjoy

people of denmark or what so ever……u think u have done a brave and applaudable job by killikg such innocent harmless and friendly creatures……remember one thing….the all mighty is watching all of us including u people….he’s not gonna spare u at any cost…..your barbarism will be paid off with equal venegence.
    no one escapes his court…..
may God show some mercy one u people…..

  • fear

all those bloody motherfuckers who kills these innocent animals will end up in hell. You son of a bitch Denmark dont u have any sort of feelings ?

    • Thor

      Hi arinjoy,
The apostles and probably Jesus to,were fishermen like 99% of the faroese men are.

      Hi fear,
Was there ever a not innocent animal?

  • gas

    rituals for gays!!!

  • W Notar

WTF!!!!!!!!!!! where is PETA when this is happening this whole town should be arrested and charged with cruelty to animals and thrown in jail for life

  • not important

this only proves that they are an isolated, unimportant little country with no real place in the rest of the world. cruelty is borne out by the childlike unintelligent mind.

  • Loveunderlaw

What a bunch of worthless punks! I’d like to take some hooks, & drag them around on the floor like the garbage they are. Poor Dolphins:(

  • pkl

I think the root of the problem is the animals intelligence. If it were Tuna we wouldn’t get much chatter here. And another point is taste, if Dolphin tasted better than Tuna we’d also see a lot less complaining.
Yes I believe this is wrong, but mainly because the animal is so smart and suffers from pain and fear during this act.
I know tradition is hard to break, but surely there is something that can be done to maintain tradition while being more thoughtful of these amazing animals. I don’t know what, but surely the people could think up something. Maybe an event to thank the Dolphins for providing food for all those years, combined with not killing them. Maybe bring them into the harbor and feed them, or possibly go into the water and play with them. I dunno, just tossing ideas out there.
For all the people complaining about killing animals period, then you should look at slaughter houses. Not only do they kill on a much much grander scale, but the animals live a miserable life from birth to death.

  • lycah

the 1st time i saw the pic it make’s me cry i love `animal’s how could this people do like what they do in the helpless dolphin they also have life. karma will come to this country they can do ritual without taking live’s. international animal welfare should do something. wish the people do this think if somebody do to them of what they do to the dolphin. cut them 3 time’s and let whole world hear them cry like a baby.

  • K

if only they just killed animals that aren’t cute, like the rest of the “normal” world.

Cool Stuff:
