The first mask was made in the neolithic period 7000 BCE. The word "mask" came via French masque and either Italian maschera or Spanish máscara. Possible ancestors are Latin mascus. The masks are used on all continents in theaters, ceremonies, festivals and rituals in some countries. People wear masks as part of their costumes through the centuries. Too bad because there is no more masquerade balls as a time of the Renaissance. They had, in my opinion, the best covers which are full of romance and luxury and could fill you with positive energy only.
